Fares & Tickets

To ride the métro (and other modes of public transport like buses) and pay your fare, you need to get a Navigo card or in certain cases, paper tickets are also available. You can also use the mobile app which lets you buy fares ahead of time and load them directly on your phone!

Quick Links

Paris T+ tickets (métro ticket)

For one trip on the bus, tramway, métro, or RER/Transilien (suburban trains) within Paris. It also allows one trip on the Montmartre Funicular and the Noctilien night buses. You get a discount for buying 10 tickets at once (called a carnet). T+ tickets are available as paper tickets, however I recommend loading them on a Navigo Easy card to benefit from a 2,00 discounts on books of 10 tickets.
  • Each ticket costs 1,90; 10 tickets cost 14,90 if loaded onto a Navigo Easy card or your phone; 10 paper tickets cost 16,90 in the format of a paper ticket.
  • You can transfer within the bus and tramway network, or within the métro, RER, & Transilien network within Paris.
  • T+ tickets are not valid on the RER/Transilien outside of Paris (fare zone 1).
  • Tickets bought on board the bus cost 2,00 and do not allow any transfers to other modes.

The Île-de-France ticket is a paper ticket which is good for one trip on the RER/Transilien (suburban trains) into the suburbs (including airports). The cost varies based on how far you go, so use the online trip planner to determine the cost of a journey.
  • The cost varies based on how far you go.
  • If your start or end your trip within Paris, a free transfer to the métro and other RER lines is included.

Navigo Day Pass & Mobilis day ticket

If you travel a lot (6+ times in a day), a day pass will probably save you money. Day passes range from 7,50 (for 2 fare zones) to 17,80 (for all 5 fare zones) depending on how many fare zones you want. Day passes are loaded onto a Navigo Easy card, Navigo Découverte card, or purchased through the mobile app.

If you don't have a card or the app, the Mobilis day ticket is a day ticket which costs the same.

Weekly and Monthly Passes

If you want a weekly or monthly pass, you will first need to purchase a Navigo Découverte card for 5 euros and you'll also need a picture or your uncovered face. You can also purchase weekly and monthly passes through the mobile app (which is free to download).

Weekly passes are 22,80 and include all 5 fare zones. Monthly passes are also available at the cost of 75,20 and also include all 5 fare zones.

Navigo cards & how to pay

The Navigo card is a reloadable, plastic smart card on which you can load fares over and over again. There are 3 different types of Navigo cards and below I explain each one. You can also pay with your phone or use paper tickets.

  • Navigo Easy card: . If you are visiting for a few days or ride occasionally and are looking for simplicity, Navigo Easy is for you! You receive discounts on books of 10 t+ tickets and airport bus tickets and you can also load day passes onto the card. A new card costs 2€ and can be purchased at an information booth in any métro/RER station.
  • Navigo Découverte card: If you want a weekly or monthly pass and are not an Île-de-France resident, the Navigo Découverte card is what you need! It lets you store daily, weekly, and monthly passes. A new card costs 5and you'll also need a 3.5 x 4.1 photo of your face (in color, uncovered fare). To get a new card, go to a "comptoir-club" (or "counter-club") in select métro and RER stations. These stations are marked with an asterisk (*) on the métro/RER map.
  • The Personalized Navigo card is only for the locals, as you must be a resident in the Île-de-France region in order to get it. To get it, go online or to an agency in your city/neighborhood with an ID and a proof of address. It is issued free of charge but costs 8€ to replace. Only one card per person.

More Ways to pay

  • Île-de-France Mobilités mobile app: Buy fares anywhere & anytime and use your phone to pay! After downloading the app for free, you can add single-ride tickets (t+ tickets) at discounted price, daily, weekly, or monthly passes.

5 Things To Remember On The Métro

5 Things to remember when riding the metro, RER, etc. How frustrating can it be when you get a fine for something you didn't even know about? When most visitors ride for the first time, they get the ticket that seems right to them and hopefully get to their destination. That's until - yeah. They're unable to exit the RER because the ticket they purchased wasn't valid. And later, they get the hefty fine for throwing their paper ticket away earlier. Anyways, here are 5 tips to not end up in a situation like that one. 1. Always keep your ticket with you until you exit the station. Very simple. If a fare inspector comes, just show them your ticket and you're good. And why not keep your paper ticket as a souvenir? In a few years, reloadable plastic cards (Navigo Easy cards) will become mandatory as the single-use paper ticket will become obsolete. 2. T+ tickets (métro tickets) cannot be used on the RER when traveling out of Paris I hear about this mistake all the time.
