Tramway Guide - About, Maps, & Fares

As a tourist in Paris, you are probably not going to ride the tramway, but it can be super useful when traveling on the border of the city and into the suburbs. Find (almost) everything about the tramway system here!

Hours of Operation

Just like the métro, the tramway operates from 5 AM to 1 AM. Frequency is about every 6 minutes during peak hours, 10 minutes during off-peak, and every 20 minutes in the evening.

How to Ride

Riding the tramway is easy. Follow these simple steps before and during your trip.
  1. Get to a tramway station: Most tramway stations have 2 platforms, one for each direction of travel. You will therefore need to know what direction you are traveling in when you get to the stop. Use the crosswalk at the end of the platform to cross the tracks.
  2. Purchasing your fare: Most tramway stations have fare vending machines, so you can reload your card or buy tickets at the tramway stop. No fares can be purchased onboard the tramway itself.
  3. Wait for your tram: Most tramway stops also have countdown clocks that indicate the wait time for the the next tramway.
  4. Enter and pay: As you enter, make sure you tap your card or insert your ticket into the slot to pay your fare. It's important to always validate your fare, even if it gives you unlimited rides or you are transferring because this tells the company how many riders there are on the line.
  5. Enjoy your trip: Audible announcement indicate the next stop on the line. There are also line maps above the doors and full system maps on the left or right of the door.
  6. Exit: The tramway stops at every station, so you will not need to request a stop to get off. If you are transferring to another line, signs on the platform tell you where to go.

Fares

A regular t+ ticket is valid for one trip on the tramway. You can transfer to/from the bus or another tramway with the same ticket, however transfers to/from the métro or RER are not possible with the same ticket. Travel passes like Navigo daily, weeekly, monthly, and many others can be used to pay as long as you have the necessary fare zones.

Tickets cannot be purchased on board the tram directly. If you don't already have a ticket or card, use the fare vending machine in the station.

Maps

The métro map shows tramways within Paris, but if you are traveling outside of Paris on the tram, use the regional transport network map.
